Melanothenia, better known as iris in the countries of the former CIS, are named so because of their color, which contains all the colors of the rainbow in the most unusual combinations. Currently, 72 species of iris are known. All of them belong to the Melanoteniidae family (Melanotaeniidae). The name of the family was given due to the dark stripe (melanos - black, taenia - stripe) running along the body of the fish, more or less noticeable in all species of iris. The first scientific description of the iris was made in 1843 from a single specimen in the British Museum in London. The fish was named Atherina nigrans. In 1862, taxonomist Thomas Gill created the independent genus Melanotaenia as part of the Atherinidae family.
