Address: Taldykorgan, Kazakhstan
This unusual animal is found in nature in the reservoirs of Bangladesh, India and neighboring countries. Although later they were able to acclimatize to life in Colombia and the USA. They live in small ponds and lakes, as well as in rice fields or slow-flowing streams. Prefer warm and soft water with an abundance of underwater flora. One of the main conditions for life is the presence of plankton in the water, nests of various insects and larvae. Lyalius belongs to the Macropod family, to labyrinth fish. Therefore, they, like their closest "relatives" gouramis, can breathe not only with gills. They swim to the surface of the aquarium and swallow air from there. In addition, they are united with these fish by an amazing hunting skill. If an insect flies over the water, then the lalius freezes, waits, and when the moment comes, spits out a trickle of water and swallows the fallen fly or mosquito. Individuals grow about 7 cm in length (females are smaller). They have a flattened body on the sides. You can distinguish lalius by various signs. For example, the fins of either sex have a bright red-orange color, but in females they are rounded, while in males, on the contrary, they are sharp. Also, females have a more silvery hue and a large abdomen. These animals were discovered back in the 19th century. In the second half of the same century, they began to be used as aquarium animals. The French aquarist Pierre Carbonnier spread them throughout Europe and other countries.
