The Indian glass perch (Parambassis ranga) is the best-known member of the Asian glass perch (Ambassidae) family. These fish are united by a high, relatively short body, strongly flattened laterally. In some publications, the old name of the species, Chanda ranga, is still found. The genus Khanda has long been considered monotypic and was represented by a single species. Over time, other closely related fish species and their geographic morphs were discovered, and the genus was renamed Parambassis. Currently, the genus includes more than a dozen species with a transparent body and living in brackish and fresh waters of East Africa and Southeast Asia. Fish got their common name for the transparency of living tissues, especially at a young age. Through their transparent body, the skeleton and the shiny shell covering the internal organs and gills are clearly visible. The transparency of the covers of the glass perch is a kind of camouflage that hides the fish from potential predators. The glass perch was introduced to Europe more than a century ago, in 1905, and a few years later it was successfully bred in an aquarium. Due to their unusual appearance, the glass perch is still popular with aquarists. In nature, glass perch inhabits fresh and brackish water bodies of the Indian coast with stagnant or slightly flowing water, such as rice fields, irrigation and drainage canals, quiet backwaters, small ponds and lakes densely overgrown with aquatic flora. Preferring places with vegetation hanging over the water, creating constant twilight along the coastline and covering the bottom of the reservoir with leaf litter. The water in such reservoirs is usually crystal clear and saturated with humic acids. Under natural conditions, glass perches grow up to 7 cm in length, in an aquarium, as a rule, no more than 4 cm.
