The people who inhabit G. Musrepov’s novel lived in the north of what is now Kazakhstan more than a hundred years ago, and the author’s main attention, as the title suggests, is given to a young woman of extraordinary character and unusual fate - Ulpan. Smart, strong-willed, fair, Ulpan tries to make life easier for the common people, adopts and implements all the best that she sees from the Russians. Thus, thanks to her efforts, the Sibans and Kerey-Uaks were the first to settle down. But all of Ulpan’s undertakings, supported by her husband, the influential biy Yesieniei, are met with protest from adherents of patriarchal relations.
