KARPINSKY Alexander Petrovich (12/26/1846 (01/07/1847) - 07/15/1936) In 1946, the USSR Academy of Sciences established a gold medal and a prize named after. A.P. Karpinsky, awarded for outstanding work in the field of geology, stratigraphy, petrology and minerals (the first to receive this award in 1947 was the outstanding Russian geologist V.A. Obruchev). The city of Karpinsk in the Sverdlovsk region, formed from the villages of Bogoslovsky and Coal mines (1941), mountains in the Urals and Taimyr, a volcano on Paramushir Island (Kuril Islands), a river on Taimyr, bays on Novaya Zemlya and Taimyr are named after Karpinsky and others. 22 species and 2 genera of protozoa, invertebrates and vertebrates, as well as 4 plant species are named in honor of Karpinsky.
