The trilogy of Ilyas Yesenberlin ("The Spellbound Sword", "Despair", "Khan Kene") is a multifaceted work that recreates the history of the Kazakh people from the 15th century to the middle of the 19th century. It shows the process of unification of Kazakh tribes after the collapse of Timur's empire, the struggle against foreign invaders and provides a historical justification for the voluntary annexation of Kazakhstan to Russia in the 18th century.
