With this model, Neumann continues its best tradition of offering high technology at an affordable price for musicians and home recording studios. The microphone uses transformerless circuitry for low self-noise and wide dynamic range. The frequency response remains linear over a fairly wide area off-axis. Thus, even sounds coming from the side are reproduced accurately and without distortion. All exposed surfaces of the microphone capsule, including the membranes, are grounded. This design makes it immune to atmospheric and electrical interference, as well as microparticle contamination. The microphone is supplied with an SG 2 microphone holder. Application Thanks to the universal cardioid pickup pattern, the TLM 193 can be used both at concerts by musicians and in budget studios for professional recording. Pickup Pattern The TLM 193 uses a large diaphragm capsule with a cardioid pickup pattern. Acoustic characteristics The Neumann logo is placed on the working side of the TLM 193 cabinet. The large capsule, located inside the protective grille, provides a smooth return and a wide reception angle across the entire radiation pattern. Graphs of all frequencies up to 10 kHz inside the 100° angle are linear and parallel to the values for 0°. The TLM 193 is different from omnidirectional pressure transducer microphones, where the diffuse and free sound field responses never match. The TLM 193 provides a very flat frequency response in a diffuse field, which is important for working in rooms with a long reverberation time, where a lot of reflected sound waves return to the microphone from different directions. When recording, the acoustic properties do not affect the tonal coloring of the sound. These characteristics are achieved without the use of resonance correction processing devices. Thus, the microphone perfectly preserves the impulse response, reproduces musical and speech details without coloring the sound. Electrical Characteristics The letters TLM (transformerless microphone) in the name of the microphone mean that it uses transformerless technology, where the transformer in the output stage is replaced by an electronic circuit. As with conventional transformers, this technology guarantees high common-mode rejection and protection of the balanced signal from RF interference. Compared to other microphones, the self-noise level of the TLM 193 is significantly lower. With the ability to operate without distortion at up to 140 dB SPL, the microphone provides a dynamic range of 130 dB (A-weighted).
