French writer Louis Boussenard is the author of numerous adventure novels that are not inferior to the best works of Jules Verne. Their distinctive features: a wealth of imagination, a sense of humor, the romance of distant countries and extensive scientific material. “The Diamond Thieves” is the author’s most famous novel, telling about the adventures of three Frenchmen who set off on a deadly journey into the heart of South Africa with the hope of taking possession of fabulous treasures.

“The Count of Monte Cristo” is a novel in which the author’s penchant for a dynamic, entertaining plot, complex intrigue, and mysterious situations was especially clearly demonstrated. The action of the novel covers a long period - from the beginning of the Restoration to the July Monarchy. It tells about the amazing fate of Edmond Dantes, who, after many adventures, takes the name of the Count of Monte Cristo and directs all his ingenuity and energy to give back kindly to those who once helped him and his family, and to take revenge on those responsible for his misfortunes.

The first book, published in Roman-Gazeta on the eve of the Great Patriotic War, immediately gained extraordinary popularity for its extraordinary literary skill, intelligent, kind and cheerful wit. The book was reprinted and filmed many times, and one reprint occurred even after the author was arrested for a political article (1946). Translated and published in English, German, French, Dutch, Danish, Hebrew and other languages.

The second book, written in a completely different, philosophical style, was written in places of detention - in Dubravlaga, where the author spent 1947-1954. The popularity of the first book helped him get permission to engage in literary creativity in the camp.

A pirate ship under the command of Captain Bernardito Luis El Gorra captures a ship in the Indian Ocean with passengers: the heir to the earldom, Fredrick Ryland, who is traveling to England from Calcutta, and his bride Emily Hardy. Bernardito's assistant, Giacomo "Leopard" Grelli, appropriates Ryland's documents and comes to England with a new name. Emily goes with him as his bride to save her fiancé's life. Captain Bernardito and the real Ryland find themselves on a desert island.

Further action is transferred from one country to another: England, Italy, Spain, the coast of Africa, the North American colonies. Among the heroes are Luddites, Jesuits, pirates, slave traders, and Indians. It tells about the past of the main characters: Giacomo Grelli turns out to be the illegitimate son of a noble Italian nobleman, and Bernardito is a Spanish grandee who was unfairly convicted, but he escaped, took revenge on his offenders, and then became a pirate.
