French writer Louis Boussenard is the author of numerous adventure novels that are not inferior to the best works of Jules Verne. Their distinctive features are: a wealth of imagination, a sense of humor, the romance of distant lands and extensive scientific material. "The Diamond Thieves" is the author's most famous novel, telling the story of the adventures of three Frenchmen who set off on a deadly journey to the heart of South Africa in the hope of taking possession of fabulous treasures.

The novel by the Italian writer Raffaello Giovagnoli (1838 - 1915) tells the story of the largest slave rebellion in history (74 - 71 BC) led by Spartacus. The first book, published in "Roman-Gazeta" on the eve of the Great Patriotic War, immediately gained extraordinary popularity for its extraordinary literary skill, intelligent, kind and cheerful wit. The book was reprinted and filmed many times, and one reprint took place even after the author was arrested for political reasons (1946). It was translated and published in English, German, French, Dutch, Danish, Hebrew and other languages.

A pirate ship under the command of Captain Bernardito Luis El Gorra captures a ship with passengers in the Indian Ocean: the heir to the earldom, Frederick Ryland, who is traveling to England from Calcutta, and his fiancée Emily Hardy. Bernardito's assistant, Giacomo Grelly, nicknamed "The Leopard", appropriates Ryland's documents and comes to England with a new name. Emily goes with him as his fiancée to save the life of her fiancé. Captain Bernardito and the real Ryland find themselves on a desert island.

The action then moves from one country to another: England, Italy, Spain, the coast of Africa, the North American colonies. Among the heroes are Luddites, Jesuits, pirates, slave traders, Indians. The story tells about the past of the main characters: Giacomo Grelly turns out to be the illegitimate son of a noble Italian nobleman, and Bernardito is a Spanish grandee who was unfairly convicted, but he escaped, took revenge on his offenders, and then became a pirate.
