The textbook “Geology and Mineral Exploration” was compiled in accordance with the requirements of the foreign language program for technical universities of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education.
The main purpose of the manual is to prepare the student for reading and understanding original literature, to teach how to conduct a conversation on texts related to the chosen specialty.
The manual is intended for senior students of geological and mining universities. The texts of the manual are mainly taken from the original English and American popular science literature, magazines and newspapers.
The book consists of five chapters. The first one introduces students to general geological terminology. The second chapter contains texts related to geophysical exploration methods. The third and fourth chapters present vocabulary on certain issues of hydrology, engineering geology, exploration methods, technical means and methods of exploration drilling. The fifth chapter contains texts for independent work of students. Some of these texts can be used for abstracts and annotations.
To the main texts of the manual, phonetic exercises are given for reading complex words, as well as words of non-English origin. Lexical exercises (including word formation) are very diverse and help the student to consolidate the vocabulary associated with their specialty. The repetition of grammatical material is carried out on a new textual material, taking into account the peculiarities of the scientific and technical style of speech.
At the end of the book, an English-Russian dictionary is given, which contains mainly vocabulary related to the mining and geological profile.
