Ethyl acetate is an ester of acetic acid and ethyl alcohol. The substance has the consistency of a volatile liquid that is colorless but has a light, sweet odor similar to pear juice. Can be used as a food additive, E1504.

The substance is a good solvent, this is one of its important properties. It perfectly dissolves adhesive-based materials, paints, films, varnishes, enamels. The boiling point of ethyl acetate is only 77°C, the melting point is 84°C, but already at room temperature the substance begins to evaporate. When reacting with alkalis, it decomposes into its original components: ethanol and acetic acid.
