The first and second volumes from the planned five-volume edition were prepared for publication in the summer of 1941, but did not come out due to the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. Thus, the publication includes descriptions and photos of many monuments that died or were significantly damaged during the occupation. Therefore, this 2-volume book is of particular interest to second-hand antique dealers. Rare copies offered for sale on specialized book sites disappear within a short time. The first volume, published by the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the USSR Academy of Sciences, appeared in 1948, the publication attracted the attention of readers and additional circulation was needed to satisfy the significant demand for this book. The circulation is limited. It was distributed among the academies of sciences and major universities of the republics of the USSR and other countries of the socialist camp. Only a few copies got into private libraries - only to venerable scientists and officials from the Communist Party.
