In mid-2015, Mail.ru Group CEO Boris Dobrodeev suggested that Yegor Abramts, who worked on the VKontakte advertising platform, become the founder of a new ad service and create it from scratch. The concept of the service was a direct interaction between users.
In October 2015, Yula launched as apps for iOS and Android. The creators focused on the mobile direction, using geolocation on smartphones to filter ads by distance, while posting ads did not require pre-moderation, and buyers contacted sellers via messenger or phone.
Until 2017, the service was positioned as completely free. In August 2017, a paid service for pre-sale preparation of an apartment appeared, including 3D photography. In October 2017, the «quick sale» function appeared — for a fee, an ad could be highlighted visually for a week and get more views. As of 2021, posting ads is free, however, each category has a limit on the number of free posts per month.
In May 2017, Yulia launched the delivery of goods based on the Boxberry service, as well as the Safe Deal function (the seller receives money on a bank card only after the buyer receives the goods).
At the same time, a chatbot appeared on VKontakte with personalized product recommendations from Yula. In July 2017, the service was integrated into the Odnoklassniki social network in the form of the Announcements section.
In July 2018, the cashback function became available to sellers who make discounts on their goods in the form of bonus points that can be spent on paying for the service.
