Leskov Nikolai Semenovich (1831-1895) was called the most national of Russian writers. Ukrainian culture, which became close to him during eight years of living in Kyiv in his youth, played a significant role in his spiritual formation.

A harmonious combination of Western influences (Balzac, George Sand, Dickens) on the one hand, deep roots in Russian cultural soil on the other, and the courage to write realistically about pressing problems, while remaining to live in Russia, made Leskov a unique phenomenon of Russian culture. The writer's work is characterized by a calm, versatile and balanced, devoid of assessments and judgments, narration of contemporary life, which allows the reader to historically reproduce a picture of Russian life, both public and intimate, among representatives of different classes and estates of Russia in the 1850s-1880s. Tolstoy spoke of Leskov as "the most Russian of our writers", Chekhov considered him, along with Turgenev, one of his main teachers.
